Am I wrong for issuing Criminal Trespass Warnings in my Townhome Community?
I really want honest feedback because this situation has escalated and I don’t know if I’m overreacting or if this is reasonable.
I live in a leased townhome community at the second-to-last unit on a dead-end street. Because it’s a dead end, it’s become a magnet for kids playing. The issue is none of the kids involved live directly next to me — the closest one is two doors down.
For months, kids from three different homes have:
• Run and played in my driveway
• Used my driveway as part of their play area
• Rung my doorbell and run off
• Ridden bikes partially into my driveway
• Yelled toward my camera
One specific child has repeatedly taunted my camera. On one occasion she encouraged another child to ride into my driveway and then screamed, “He’s on your property!” while it was happening. She has also ridden her bike up very close to me when I pull into my driveway and just stared at me, which honestly feels intentional and provoking.
I repeatedly reported this to the leasing office. After months of it continuing, I installed a Ring camera that announces when recording is in progress. Two of the kids became upset that it kept making alerts and shortly after that, glass was thrown into my driveway. At that point, I contacted the sheriff and had them come out.
Separately, the adult male who lives two doors down regularly cuts across my driveway as a shortcut to walk to a nearby field or to talk to neighbors at the end unit. He knows I don’t want people using my driveway because I’ve consistently reported it to leasing. It continued anyway.
I ultimately issued criminal trespass warnings to two of the homes involved.
When police went to trespass the home two doors down, the adult male wasn’t there. The woman told police he “doesn’t live there, he just visits,” which isn’t true — it’s her boyfriend and he’s there constantly. That made me believe he’s likely not on the lease, so I informed the leasing office after finding that out.
Now I’m questioning myself.
Was I wrong to escalate to criminal trespass?
At what point does repeated intrusion + doorbell ringing + taunting + glass being thrown stop being “kids being kids”?
Is it unreasonable to report someone potentially living there who may not be on the lease after ongoing issues?
I’ve tried handling everything through leasing first. I don’t confront the kids. I document and report.
I just want to feel comfortable pulling into my own driveway without feeling targeted.
Honest opinions welcome.
