Does liking me require paying for me?

Discussion

Growing up, my mum always told me to be shameless when it comes to men. Her logic was simple:

If a man wants to see you, he should pay for your hair, nails, outfit, shoes, transport and beyond that, you should also express your financial needs and wants. If he can’t cater to them or says it’s too much, don’t entertain him. According to her, a man who’s truly interested should do all of that without being asked.

I’ll be honest. I’ve asked for money before. But only when I genuinely had no other option and really needed it. Still, it doesn’t sit right with me. I’m capable of meeting my needs. I’m not rich, but I can finance my life comfortably. So why should I have to ask a man for money just because he’s interested in me? It feels transactional. Like interest = financial obligation.

And I can’t relate to that mindset at all. I also want to be clear, I’m not judging women who ask men for money. Everyone’s circumstances, survival strategies, and boundaries are different, and sometimes people do what they need to do. This isn’t about moral superiority. It’s about the fact that for me personally, that dynamic doesn’t sit right, and I’m trying to understand where the line between standards and transactions actually is.

I’d actually like to hear other perspectives on this, especially from people who grew up with similar advice but feel differently about it.

TD;LR: I was raised to believe that a man’s interest should come with financial provision. I don’t judge people who live by that, but for me it feels transactional, and I’m trying to understand where standards end and financial obligation begins.
