Chapter 1

When I signed up for the National Watercolor Invitational, the live chat suddenly flashed in front of my eyes.

[Here we go, the male lead’s one–that–got–away is back, steals the female lead’s piece, and ends up exposed, publicly

humiliated, and completely disgraced!]

[Sure, the male lead and the one–that–got–away are childhood friends who grew up together, but they haven’t seen each

other in seven or eight years, and that doesn’t stand a chance against a couple who’ve been glued together day and

night!]

[What “one–that–got–away“? Sloane Grant is at best a textbook villainess side character, so don’t drag that phrase

through the mud.]

Lila Hayes, dressed in the same style I used to wear, walked up to me…

“Hi. I’m Lila from the class next door,” she said. “I’ve heard you’re really good, and I’ve wanted to meet you for a while. I

just didn’t expect we’d end up in the same competition.”

I nodded without much expression.

After the event, Lila grabbed me, her eyes red–rimmed, and demanded an answer.

“You swapped my piece, didn’t you?” she said. “Do you seriously feel no guilt winning with a trick that dirty?”

Zane Beckett’s brows knit so tight you could’ve pinched a fly between them.

“Go submit your withdrawal with the organizers,” he said. “You don’t qualify for the finals.”

Everyone’s contempt landed on me at once, and I pointed at the worst piece on the wall as I asked, genuinely confused.

“Win what?” I said. “I’m dead last, and I’m not even eligible for the finals.”

The live chat went completely feral.

[Holy shit, holy shit, what is going on?!]

Lila shot back, incredulous.

“You’re supposed to be a painting prodigy.” she said. “How could that chicken–scratch mess possibly be yours?”

The same Zane who’d pretended not to know me when I signed up seized my wrist.

“Sloane!” he said. “You’ve been painting since you were a kid, and you spent seven or eight years training abroad so how

could you place dead last?”

For a second, I honestly didn’t know what to say.

If he recognized me, then he should know this.

Chapter 1

I’ve always trained in oil painting, not watercolor brushwork.

I only entered because my parents mentioned Zane was one of the judges and told me to give him a *“*surprise”

I was only signing up for fun, and I didn’t care about placing at all. I just didn’t expect the live chat to blindade me the moment I registered.

“You’re a repeat offender,” Zane snapped. “All those awards you won were probably stolen too, and I grew up with you, w I’m not letting you keep going down this road.”

I was completely thrown; his rapid–fire spiel had me totally lost.

Since when did I steal anything?

And as for me and Zane, our parents‘ companies partnered, so we met maybe three or four times, and the last time was seven or eight years ago.

How did that turn into “growing up together“?

Zane decided my guilt for me anyway.

“Withdraw voluntarily,” he said. “Hold a press conference and return every bit of glory that never belonged to you, or I’ll call off our engagement.”

He was so strong he dragged me several steps, and I still couldn’t wrench free.

I stared at him, baffled. “Engagement?”

My parents had never mentioned me being engaged to anyone, and they’d always believed you should choose who you

love. So what was he even talking about?

Apparently, my confusion looked like fear to him.

A flash of disdain crossed his eyes. “If our parents hadn’t told me to look out for you, I wouldn’t spare you a second

glance.”

Tears clinging to her cheeks, Lila put on a conciliatory act.

“If she won’t admit it, then forget it,” she said. “It’s just a competition, and there’s always next year.”
