Daughter wants me to build a relationship with her child but I’m just not interested and want to retire in peace. Am I wrong?

I’m in my mid 50s. My ex wife and I divorced a long time ago after she had an affair. My daughter knew about the affair and hid it from me. I never blamed my daughter for any of it, but I won’t lie, it hurt watching my ex, her affair partner (now husband), and my daughter form this new family unit. It felt like I got written out of my own life story. My daughter’s still close to the step dad.

I tried dating after the divorce. I genuinely wanted another longterm relationship. But nothing happened. Eventually I stopped fighting it and figured maybe that part of my life was just over.

Then I turned 50, and I had a sort of come to Jesus moment. I realized I didn’t want to spend the rest of my life sitting in the same town, carrying the same quiet resentment, watching everyone else move on. I was financially comfortable. I didn’t need to keep working and slogging just so my daughter and granddaughter could inherit all my assets, as harsh as it is to say. So I retired, sold all four of my houses, packed up, and moved to Spain.

Since then I’ve traveled all over Europe. I met someone in Spain, and for the first time since my divorce, I felt genuinely loved. We dated for a couple of years and got married last month. In two years she has shown me more affection, loyalty, and care than my ex did in fifteen years. I honestly didn’t know a relationship could feel this amazing.

The issue is that my daughter has been asking where I am. I’ve kept it vague, she just knows I’m somewhere in Europe. She keeps pushing for me to be more involved in her child’s life, to build a relationship with my grandchild.

And I’ll be honest: I’m not interested. I don’t feel drawn to go back to the U.S. at all. I don’t want to reinsert myself into that orbit, my ex, her husband, that whole chapter. I finally feel free. My focus right now is my wife, our life together, traveling, enjoying the years I have left in peace.

I know how this sounds. I know people will say, “That’s your daughter. That’s your grandchild.” And logically, I understand that. But emotionally, I don’t feel the pull. I feel like I already lost my place in that family a long time ago. I built something new.

Am I wrong for choosing my peace over rebuilding something that feels like it already ended years ago?
