I need to know if this is a friendship worth keeping
Sorry for any mistakes. English is my first language but I suck at writing. I (35F) and one of my closest friends (35F) were hanging out at my house. We have been friends since high school but back then neither of us was political. Since 2020 I feel like everyone has gotten more outspoken about politics. I live in Utah so I usually keep my opinion to myself. I have found that I'm not on the same political spectrum as most people here and I also hate conflict. Well, today my friend was recapping her day and was telling me something about a protester she saw on the corner and the first amendment. I could already tell we were not going to agree on the point she was making. I agreed with some of her points and kept quiet about the rest. She kept pushing the subject eventhough I had already shared some of my thoughts. Everything was fine with us up to this point. She kept talking about it (probably because she could tell I wasn't being completely open). Finally told her I was over the conversation. She kept repeating herself. Finally I snapped and shared the rest of my opinion and told her that if she was going to take a legal stance, she should also take a moral stance and that we can't use the 1st ammendment to cause harm to others. She said "words don't cause harm, you choose to react." To which I said words DO cause harm. She said I was being too sensitive. I feel like people often use "being too sensitive" as a way to rationalize being unethical or pushing moral issues to the side. We ended up arguing and she left. My dilema now is that I don't know if I can keep up this friendship but I also don't want to let her go as a friend. Besides our long history she is smart and fun and sometimes her ideas give me a new perspective. I like the challenge of her outlook on life. But she has continuously ignored me when I've told her I don't want to continue conversations. And she's always finding a way to invalidate my arguments when we talk. She's much better at arguing and knows a lot about history so I feel I make poor arguments. I just don't know what to do about the friendship. Any advice is welcome.
