Aelith Tidewarden — Origin of the Winter Foundling
The winter she was found was merciless.
Ice clung to the edges of the harbor like a tightening fist, and the forest beyond the docks groaned under snow-heavy branches. On a routine patrol along the tree line — where port met pine and law met wild — Captain Edran Vale stopped at a sound too soft to be wind.
A bundle lay half-buried at the forest’s edge.
No footprints led away.
Inside torn sailcloth was an elven infant, skin chilled but alive, eyes impossibly green against the white of winter.
Edran had buried three children before they ever drew breath. His wife, Mara — the port’s physician and herbalist — had long since stopped asking the gods for mercy.
But that night, the forest answered instead.
They named her Aelith — breath returned.
And they never called her “found.”
She was their daughter.
Aelith grew between two worlds.
From her mother she learned the quiet arts: how to read fever in flushed cheeks, how to grind pearl root and salt moss into healing paste, how to close wounds with steady hands and softer words. Mara taught her that magic was patience, not spectacle.
From her father she learned vigilance. How to watch shoulders for intent. How to move in armor without sound. How to draw and fire a crossbow in one smooth breath. Edran was more than a guard captain — he was a druid sworn to protect the boundaries of the world: shore and forest, city and wild.
He did not tell Aelith what she was.
He waited for her to discover it.
The town tolerated her.
They respected her parents too much to do otherwise.
But she felt the distance in glances that lingered too long, in children’s whispers about pointed ears, in merchants who spoke around her rather than to her. She belonged — but only through borrowed acceptance.
Travelers changed everything.
Elven traders from distant forests. Sailors who spoke of emerald canopies beyond the horizon. Wandering druids who recognized something in her stance.
From them she gathered rigid tradition and evolving tide
You weren’t unwanted.
You were considered too important.
And fear made them cautious.
