Wedding dress or honeymoon spending

Budget Question

Okay, I need some advice because I’m completely torn.

I went dress shopping today with the full intention of only trying on different styles, not actually buying anything in-store. I had found a couple of dresses online that I loved, and I really just wanted to see similar silhouettes in person before ordering something more affordable.

Before my appointment, though, my mom pulled me aside and told me she wanted to pay for my dress. I immediately told her she didn’t have to, I know money is tight for her, and I’ve always planned on paying for my own dress. But she insisted. She said that as my mom, this was something she really wanted to do for me.

I asked what kind of budget we were talking about so I’d know what to look at, and she told me to choose something I love. If it was too expensive, we could figure it out or possibly split it. Realistically, I know around $1,000 is probably her max, which is part of why I feel so conflicted. I hate the idea of taking money from her when I know she’s not in the best financial position, but I also know how much it would mean to her to contribute.

At the store, we mostly looked at clearance dresses. I found a few that were cute, but none of them gave me that “this is the one” feeling. Then I asked to try on two blush gowns. I’ve always pictured myself in blush since my wedding is mostly pink, and anyone who knows me knows pink is my favorite color.

Both dresses were above the budget I had in mind, but I figured it didn’t hurt to try them on just to see how I felt about the color. I still planned on going home and ordering something cheaper online anyway.

Well… the exact thing everyone warns you about happened.

I fell in love.

I didn’t want to take either dress off. If they had been within budget, I would’ve said yes on the spot. But I tried to downplay how much I loved them because I didn’t want my mom to feel pressured or stressed about the price.

Here’s where I’m stuck: one dress is out of the question but the other is affordable if we split it, and my portion would end up being about what I originally planned to spend anyway. So financially, it wouldn’t completely derail things.

But the practical side of me keeps thinking I should just order a cheaper dress online, save the extra money, and put it toward our honeymoon. At the same time, I’m really nervous about ordering something non returnable without ever trying it on. I don’t dress up often, and I’m usually critical of how I look in dresses. The one I tried on today? I felt beautiful in it.

So now I’m going back and forth between:

“This is my wedding day I should get the dress I truly love.”

And:

“It’s one day. Be practical. Save the money.”

Do I split the cost and get the dress I know I love?

Or do I go with a more affordable online option and put the savings toward our honeymoon?

I genuinely don’t know what the right choice is.

More info: the sites I was looking at online are mostly Etsy and jjshouse.

Our honeymoon is 2 days after our wedding and we’re going to Japan (we live in USA)
