I've heard of rumors of a population of naturalized sabal minor in a small town for a long time and I finally found them on Google Earth. They were planted in the 1960s so they have been there for decades even when this area was zone 7a. I'm not sure what the cold hardiness zone was back in the 1960s (6b or 7a?) but I know it was zone 7a before 2023 and now it is zone 7b. I even saw a needle palm and unfortunately a dead windmill palm that was pretty tall. If I had to guess, the windmill palm was protected for several years to get that height and for whatever reason, they stopped protecting it in winter.

The dwarf palmettos are found on the property and even naturalized across the road by a fence. It looks like birds ate the seeds and perched on the fence and dropped them there. There is a wooden board on the top of the fence where the dwarf palmettos are under that looks like the birds perched on and other parts of the fence don't seem to have any where there is only the metal fence. They have survived very cold temperatures over the years several degrees below zero and obviously not protected. I also saw a tree that wasn't sure whether it was a live oak or not.

I just thought I would share this to show how cold hardy sabal minor can really be and how far north and cold of an area they can naturalize in.
