I can't get my controller to work after coming back years later

I've just redownloaded the game and am running into an issue that my xbox controller only registers as 2nd player and i cant play how im used to. How can i fix this? even if i use the controller to load in without touching my mouse or keyboard it still changes nothing.

(as i remember before i would usually just touch my joystick and it would make my mouse disapear but now the mouse cursor stays and i think thats a major part of it)
