Can I avail EWS benefits after availing the certificate?

Ask r/UPSC

I am currently applying for the UPSC Civil Services Examination and, while filling out the application form, I was asked to provide details regarding my mother’s occupation and annual income.

I would like to clarify that my parents are legally divorced. Until the age of 18, I was under the legal guardianship of my mother. However, after attaining majority, I have been under the custody and guardianship of my father. My mother has since remarried and has a separate family, and I am not financially or socially associated with her.

I have obtained an EWS certificate for Central Government posts based solely on my father’s occupation and income, as I am dependent on him. However, I am uncertain about how to correctly fill in my mother’s income details in the application form and whether her income would be considered while determining my eligibility under the EWS category, despite the legal divorce and change in guardianship.

I request guidance on whether my mother’s income must be included for EWS eligibility under these circumstances, and whether this may cause any legal issues at a later stage of the examination process.

(Contacted the UPSC helpline but could not get a definite answer)
