AITAH for blowing up at my dad for making a dinner we don’t like
i (m21) live with my parents (both 50s) and younger sister. I pay them weekly rent and they want me to continue living with them until i finish college.
i, my mother, and my sister all despise mushrooms. when we were younger we would still be served them (mother ate different food) to make sure we wouldn’t ‘copy’ my mother’s dislike of them and would still try them. both of us ended up hating them and would struggle to eat any meals with them, regardless of how they were added in.
for the past couple of years we have used a food service (think hellofresh) and it works out great. on occasion meals will arrive that have mushrooms, so typically we will leave them out, my dad will fry some for himself to add to his plate, and the rest will be given to our neighbors.
yesterday i got home just as my father finished making one of the meals, served it and we all began to eat. i thought the sauce had a nasty aftertaste but pushed through since i don’t like to waste food. my mom ate a few bites, said ‘this has mushrooms in it’, and then didn’t eat any more of that part of the meal.
my father was offended and said it was rude to not eat his cooking, so i responded that it was ruder to serve food he has known not to over 20 years. he said he wants to have mushrooms properly incorperated into ‘at least one meal in his life’ and he then said that if i didnt want to eat what he provided i clearly have no respect for him, to which i (which was way too harsh probably) said ‘well you have no respect for your wife so why would i respect you’. he hasnt spoken to me since.
my sister thinks i shouldnt have responded to him at all and just left it, and my mother was upset over it but thinks i should apologise just to break the ice with my father.
idk, i think he knows he messed up even if its just a minor thing, and that he should apologise to me. aita?
