Why year-end inventory audits feel chaotic
Because they’re usually trying to fix an entire year of blind spots in one go.
Inventory changes every day, sales, returns, damages, transfers.
But physical validation often happens once a year.
By the time the audit starts:
- Small errors have compounded
- Staff don’t remember why adjustments were made
- Temporary workarounds became “normal”
- Shrinkage, receiving errors, and transfer issues surface all at once
So the audit turns into a correction event, not an investigation.
Teams that spread validation across the year, cycle counts, movement-based checks, and same-day reconciliation, usually find year-end audits become confirmation exercises instead of fire drills.
How do you handle this in your operation?
Do you rely mostly on cycle counts, or is year-end still the main event?
