Deciding between difficult surgery or permanent back pain??

8 years ago I had spinal surgery to correct my scoliosis, and just a few months ago the rod attached to my spine broke. I’ve been in constant pain and even more exhausted than I already was ever since, to the point where I can’t be out of my house for more than two or three hours and when I come back I immediately need to sleep.

I’ve just seen a spinal specialist and his advice was that I can either have surgery again (this time more invasive and with a much more difficult recovery period) or I can live with the broken rod and the pain (with no risk of it getting worse). I’m allergic to painkillers and anti-nausea medication so my first surgery was quite traumatic and I had to recover on Panadol alone. I’m terrified of having to go through that again so I immediately want to avoid the surgery but I’m also frustrated and devastated by the limitations the injury is causing. I’m already living with chronic pain from my hEDS and I have a PT, OT and support from my local hospital so theoretically I could eventually adjust?

I guess I’m just looking for some other perspectives/experiences from people with the same or similar circumstances because I’m really lost on what to do. So if you have any insights for me I would love to hear them. Thank you!
