I’m scared I won’t be chosen by a host family.

Question

To preface, I’m typing this from my phone, so I apologize for any formatting issues:( So, I’m a student from America (Rus/Eng). I was formally accepted into YFU Japan last November, and I’m leaving this August for a semester. I applied extremely early, almost 2 years before I’m supposed to depart. My family has already paid the non-refundable fee, and everything else is all ready other than the final payment and a couple finishing touches.

I’ve been speaking to one agent from YFU about all of my questions, and she’s been really helpful. I asked her when I’m expected to know my host family, and she said “around June”. I thought this was a bit strange, as I leave in August, but she told me they are still struggling to place their spring students. I find this crazy, as spring is quite soon. These are high demand students. I’d say I’m not a desirable student for the average Japanese family, being an American. We aren’t known to have the best education or the best manners (I’m not saying I’m uneducated or rude, but these are the stereotypes). This really worries me. If students with amazing culture and schools can’t be chosen, how will I? Yes, I’m a good student, but if the best of the best can’t be placed, what if I can’t? This would be a big problem , as I’ve been studying Japanese for around 3 years, planned my school withdrawal, and am taking credit recovery classes online. If my program ends up getting cancelled, I don’t know what I’ll do. I know I have to be flexible, but all this preparation has been a lot of work. I’d have to completely change my graduation plan.

I’m sorry if the tag isn’t right, this is more of asking for advice than a question. Does anybody have experience with not being chosen? Or host family placement with YFU in general? Advice would be much appreciated, I’m really stressing.
