Best bird/wildlife sanctuaries to visit in NZ?

Travelling NZ and looking to visit some bird/wildlife sanctuaries on the way, particularly where I can see the native birds

Are there any worth visiting more than others? Looking at both north and south so any recommendations welcome:)
