AIO for considering cutting contact with extended family over this?
I’m 27 and my husband is 30. We have two kids, a 4 year old daughter who is turning 5 and a 1 year old son.
We surprised our daughter with a Disney trip for her birthday. We decided not to bring our 1 year old because he would not remember it and we wanted this to be special one on one time for her. My parents are watching him.
We told our daughter she could bring one cousin since we can afford to take one extra child. She chose her 9 year old cousin. Her mom is totally fine with it, and my husband, his siblings, and even my in laws support it.
The problem is some extended family members are saying we are being unfair by only taking one child and not all the cousins. We cannot afford to take everyone, and we wanted someone close in age to our daughter.
This is also the same side of the family that has shamed me in the past for formula feeding and called me a bad mom for it.
My husband thinks we should just cut contact with them because they constantly criticize our parenting choices. I’m torn because while I’m tired of the judgment, cutting family off feels extreme.
Am I overreacting for even considering going low contact or no contact over this, or is this a reasonable boundary after repeated criticism?
