How to Use Negative Thinking to Achieve Positive Goals:
**WOOP — A simple tool to actually follow through on goals**
A lot of us set big goals and feel motivated at first… but then life happens and we fall off. One reason is that pure positive thinking can backfire — when we only imagine success, the brain feels like we’ve already achieved it, and motivation drops._
**A more effective approach is called WOOP:**
- **W** — Wishes: What do you want? (Realistic but challenging)
- **O** — Outcomes: Why does it matter? How will it _feel_ if you succeed?
- **O** — Obstacles: What will realistically get in your way? (Habits, triggers, emotions, time, etc.)
- **P** — Plans: Create an if-then response. “If ___ happens, then I will ___.”
The framework can be applied to bigger, long term goals — and sub goals on the way to getting there.
And for those familiar with it, this framework integrates well with the SMART or SMART(ER) goal setting framworks.
**Basic examples:**
- If I feel triggered to isolate → then I will message someone in the group.
- If I don’t have time to do a full workout → then I’ll do 5-10 minutes anyway.
- If cravings hit → then I’ll drink water and wait 10 minutes.
**The key insight:**
Success isn’t about motivation — it’s about preparing for the obstacles before they happen._
Pick one goal today. Take 5 minutes. WOOP it.
Small consistent wins → big intentions.
