Falling Behind in Public

Advice

This is sort of a rant but I feel the need to ask what I should do in this situation. I’ve been at a medium sized firm now for just over 2 years in tax and I’m still stuck working as an associate with little hope I’ll be promoted this summer. The other associate who started later than me is starting to be put in review roles and yet here I am still preparing basic level returns.

I know I’m not the greatest but I have established myself through a tough busy season last year working on clients with no seniors and doing return reviews so I don’t know why I’m not being given the same opportunities.

On top of this I’ve failed the cpa exam at least 7 times and the one section I passed already expired. I have a masters degree and it feels wasted. I’m still trying to pass but with the last busy season finished I’ve lost all my motivation.

Now we have to go into the office in person 3 times a week and I’m dreading having to face my coworkers and feel ashamed every time someone else passes. I feel so isolated and alone and even though I go to happy hours and try to put myself out there at firm events I don’t feel like any of it has helped.

I wasted time the first year learning a different part of tax and they’ve stopped talking with me a year ago once they got someone new to do the work for them. My mentor went from seeming like he enjoyed talking and working with me to now hating my guts for zero reason. My coach says she believes I’ll be in line to get promoted but at this point I just think they want me to quit.

Is it worth looking for a new firm? can I even apply for senior roles even if I don’t get promoted? I know this is a kind of mean subreddit but please be kind, I know I suck.
