Ano ang pinag-kaiba ng trade name sa trademark?
For small business owners, here’s a tip for you!
What is the difference between a trade name and a trademark? Is it necessary to have both registered?
A trade name is the legal name of your business entity. In the Philippines, trade names are registered with the DTI (for sole proprietors) or SEC (for corporations). Meanwhile, a trademark is the identity of your brand that protects your logo, symbol, or slogan, and is registered with IPOPHL.
Trade names and trademarks are often used interchangeably, but they actually have different meaning/purposes. For example:
Trade Name (Business Name):
Jollibee Foods Corporation
Trademark (Brand):
Jollibee
The “Jollibee Foods Corporation” is the legal name of the company registered with SEC to operate. On the other hand, the mascot/logo and slogan like “Bida ang Saya!” are trademarks.
Hence, when starting your business, it’s a good idea to register both your trade name and your trademark. This provides extra protection for your business and its identity.
