Travelling with Tree Nut Allergies
Hello!
I am going to San Juan in a few weeks and I am pretty excited as I've never been to Puerto Rico and I have been itching to leave the mainland United States again. I love to eat out and taste different cultures, however I do have a severe tree nut allergy - I can't have any of them (cashews, walnuts, pine nuts, etc. any nut that grows on a tree) without having a subsequent trip to the hospital. I also do not know a lick of Spanish, however I will be carrying an allergy card that lists the allergies to give to a restaurant, and learning what I can to try and communicate my allergy to those who need to know.
That being said, I wanted to ask: will I be able to eat any authentic food? How hard of a time will I have if I choose to eat out? I know I probably won't be able to have any pastries, but is there anything I should avoid?
And, of course, are there any recommendations for places I should try? Nothing touristy either, I want to be as local as possible! Thanks!
