I’m the lyricist behind an album called Masks, and I wanted to share a bit of the reality behind writing it, because for me the songs weren’t just creative ideas. They were survival notes.

A lot of my life has been shaped by late-diagnosed ADHD, anxiety, burnout cycles, relationship trauma, faith struggles, and the constant feeling that my brain never quite worked the way the world expected it to. For years I thought the problem was just “try harder” or “push through,” and that mindset eventually wrecked me.

When I started writing these songs, I made a decision that I wasn’t going to sanitize anything. No pretending I had everything figured out. No inspirational-poster version of healing. I wanted to write from inside the actual moments:

The burnout where motivation disappears.

The relationships where you slowly lose yourself.

The anger you don’t act on but feel building.

The quiet recovery where nothing dramatic happens, you just finally stop falling.

The moments where faith isn’t certainty, it’s just asking for enough strength to get through the day.

Each track ended up becoming a snapshot of a different mental state. Not a concept album in the fictional sense, more like a timeline of what it actually feels like to live through those phases.

For me, songwriting became less about performance and more about giving those parts of my mind somewhere to exist safely outside of me. Once the lyrics were on paper, they weren’t just spinning endlessly in my head anymore.

I’m curious if other writers or musicians here have had that experience, where lyrics stop being “art” and start feeling more like documentation of what you survived.

If you’ve gone through something similar, I’d honestly love to hear how writing (or any creative outlet) helped you process it.
