Why do 2 sellers ship the same product — but one pays ₹58 and the other pays ₹132?
This is one of the biggest shocks for new eCommerce sellers.
Same product. Same city. Same courier brand.
Still, shipping cost can be completely different.
The reason is: shipping rate is not only about weight.
In most cases, sellers only check “500g / 1kg rate” and assume that’s the final cost.
But actual cost changes because of things like:
- pickup pincode
- delivery zone
- volumetric weight (package size)
- COD charges
- fuel surcharge
- remote area / ODA charges
- RTO risk on that lane
So one seller may be shipping a compact package in a strong service lane, and another seller may be shipping the same item in bulky packaging to a difficult pincode.
That’s why the rates look “unfair” — but actually the billing logic is different.
This is also where many sellers feel confused with aggregators/couriers because they compare only product weight, not chargeable weight + zone + surcharges.
Honestly, once you understand this one thing, logistics starts making much more sense.
A lot of shipping cost problems are not because your product is heavy —
they happen because your packaging and shipping lane are expensive.
If you’re a seller, always check this before judging your shipping cost:
Dead weight vs volumetric weight + destination zone.
That single check can save a lot of money.
