Mexican family + not participating in Lent — mom said “what is wrong with you?”

Personal

I’m 21 and come from a Mexican family where Catholicism is very tied to culture and tradition. I recently told them I’m not participating in Lent this year because I don’t really identify as Catholic anymore.

They’re not forcing me, which I’m grateful for, but my mom doesn’t seem to fully believe that I genuinely don’t believe anymore. When we talked about it, she said, “what is wrong with you?” It wasn’t explosive or dramatic, but it definitely made me feel misunderstood.

I’ve honestly felt disconnected from Catholicism for a long time. Even growing up, church felt inauthentic to me. I’m not angry at it — I just don’t resonate with it.

I’m wondering if anyone else from culturally Catholic families (especially Mexican/Latino families) has experienced this kind of subtle disbelief or confusion when stepping away? Not hostility, just not being taken seriously.
