Metformin vs GLP-1 for someone who needs to lose weight for back pain and probably has diabetes

General/Advice

Hello I am 28, my BMI is 32.8. My fasting blood sugar is 8.4 so my doctor had me do another blood test (not fasting) and I assume it's not great because they immediately called to make a followup appointment.

Before this though I have expressed that I am desperate to lose weight, as I lumbar disc herniations which have put me in the ER at some point, so losing weight would really help lighten the load.

Over the years I have managed to lose 9kgs on my own through diet and exercise but have been hitting a plateau for over half a year. My initial doctor has danced around the idea of Wegovy or Mounjaro for weightloss, however since I probably have diabetes, I have been transferred to a different doctor.

Some of my family members have diabetes/PCOS runs in the family so I am aware Metformin is usually the first response. But since I'm in a bit of a desperation to lose some weight for the sake of my spine, I am wondering if I should champion for glp-1 instead?

Has anyone experience both metformin and glp-1? what are your thoughts? is it normal to trial GLP-1 first for weight loss and then move back to metformin for maintenance?
