My IMI Delhi interview Experience
So, this was the first interview that I have given in my whole life. All in all I messed up. The only college where I had any chance of conversion.
Slot: 2:15-4:15 (mine started around 2:40 something, lasted i dont know how long, basically i crashed out after the interview literally laughing at what have I done)
Panel: one male and one female (both of them looked very young)
Me: Greeted
F: How do you pronounce your name ( its not prounced as it is spelled)
Me: told
F: what does it mean
Me: told
F: you graduated last year so what were you doing after that.
Me: told her i was preparing for CAT and other exams alongwith with few courses in HR and marketing ( big slip up, i didnt want to mention that in any of the interview because i didnt remember any of it, but I did)
F: what field do you want to go into
Me: finance
F: why after you did courses in hr and marketing
Me: ( now, mind you I wasnt going to mention those two so I did not prepare this answer as well) Made something on the spot. Something about how decisions and outcomes could be measured objectively in numbers.
F: Dont you think in HR and marketing also, the decisions could be measured objectively?
Me: again made something up here
F: Do you know what is market sentiment
Me: told (but I dont think she was impressed. I agree. I also wasn't)
F: where are you from?
Me: told Bihar
F: lets say I make you the CM of Bihar for one year, what will you do? (Now, i hate these type of questions)
Me: i told her i would invest in infrastructure and education, how there is a skill based gap between bihar and other cities. (At this point, I was rambling with full confidence)
Here she asked 1 or 2 follow ups on this which I dont remember.
Over to Sir.
M: You said you would invest in education and their is a skill gap. I also happen to be from Bihar (π€¦ββοΈ) what different would you do?
Me: I said I would focus more on outside the classroom activities than inside. Elaborated (rambled) on it a bit.
M: Now, he said that I dont think there is a skill gap or talent gap because people from bihar go outside, earn very well in corporate, so (1) why do you think they go outside? (2)what would you do to keep them in Bihar?
Me: Now i blanked here. I just couldnt say anything for around 30-45 sec. But I had to say something, I just couldnt look at his face right. So, i said I would look into it.
Now, here he started helping me. He said no, think about it now. He helped me alot here. He gave me a few suggestions and said calm down, think about it. Then, I answered something.
M: what is the difference between credit risk and market risk?
Me: didnt now
M: no worries. Difference between stock and bond.
Me: told
M: give me 5 finance roles
Me: corporate finance, investment banking, financial analyst( he said he wouldnt count it, so keep it out), risk manager, CFA(π€¦ββοΈ, i regretted the moment I said that).
M: what does an investment banker do? Me: told. Looked like he wasnt impressed. Agree. I wasnt as well.
*1 or 2 follow ups, i dont remember
M: which is safer, debt or equity and why Me: I said equity (π€¦ββοΈ) immediately apologised and said a combination of both. He said choose one (friendly tone) so told debt and explained why.
M: what are your interests
Me: i clarified if he asked about hobbies(π€¦ββοΈ), he said hobbies. So told.
Over to Ma'am
F: any questions for us
Me: asked few recommendation for non fiction books as I read only fiction F: she told she was very wrong person to ask because she also reads only fiction. But she told me to read about the field you want to go to, read newspapers to know whats going around.
Then it ended.
So, both of the panelist were very friendly, very nice, they helped me a lot in the middle when I fumbled a few times. I think I annoyed the hell out of the male panelist, but he was also very nice about it. But I was smiling in the whole interview, half of the time to show that I am not nervous or underconfident, half of the time on my stupidity. I dont think I would convert but the whole experience taught me how not to give interviews. It would definitely help me prepare for the others. Overall I woulld rate it " what the hell did you do"/10 or "i shouldnt have said that"/10 or "what not to do in an interview"/10 Or π€¦ββοΈ/10
