OCR for Chinese learning - what's in your workflow?

Discussion

I'm a developer building a macOS desktop OCR app with CJK support and trying to figure out what actually works for learners in practice - so this is partly research, partly genuine curiosity.

I come from the Japanese side of things, so I know the ecosystem there pretty well - manga-ocr, Mokuro, Yomitan etc. With fine-tuned models the difference in accuracy on stylized/messy text is pretty noticeable.

Wondering if there's anything comparable on the Chinese side, or if people are mostly relying on general-purpose solutions like Google Lens and finding them good enough.

So:

  • What apps or tools are you actually using day-to-day for manhwa, games, video, etc.?
  • If you've compared multiple OCR options - what's your take on accuracy, especially for vertical texts?

Tech note - aside from macOS Vision api (native and fast, but useless for vertical text) - PP-OCRv5 (PaddleOCR) from Baidu has been looking pretty solid for - seems accurate and lightweight enough to pack and use locally, which is my priority - don’t want to rely on any external apis.
