Major takeaway/ life lesson from the show

What is a life lesson you can take from the show? For me apart from the effects of alcoholism and drug abuse and how they affect families, a major takeaway is that you cannot be wealthy by being employed. You have to own something. I learned this after Fiona tried to negotiate for a payrise and was turned down, prompting her to buy the laundry and apartment.
