Unable to serve spouse through process server.

New Jersey

I recently filed for uncontested divorce in NJ. My spouse and I talk but not necessarily on good terms. At first I wanted to get him to notarized a form that says he received the divorce summons but he kept pushing the day for us to go to notary. So I hired a process server,by his own admission,at least one of the three attempts,he was home and chose not to answer. Even though he’s been aware of the divorce petition and the process server. I can’t tell if he’s avoiding service and genuinely just kept missing service. Now NJ only allows about two weeks to serve papers officially but I saw that I can use the process server attempts to request alternative. Does anyone have experience with this ? I filed pro se. What are the steps to take to avoid having my petition dismissed?
