Unfollowed
I called into silence,
twice
and the quiet answered louder than a voice ever could.
I watched my name sit there,
unreturned,
like a question she never planned to read.
I told myself it was nothing,
just a friend,
just a missed call,
just timing
But my chest knew better.
It wasn’t her voice I missed,
it was the version of us
that only existed in my head.
The late-night laughs that hadn’t happened,
the effort she might one day give,
the future I built
out of almosts.
So I stepped back.
Unfollowed.
Closed the door softly
even though my heart wanted to slam it
or run back inside.
And it hurt.
It hurt like letting go of a dream
that never fully woke up.
But somewhere between the silence
and the self-respect,
something shifted.
The air felt lighter.
My thoughts felt clearer.
My worth stopped waiting
for someone else’s reply.
Maybe she wasn’t meant for me.
Maybe she was meant to teach me
That love shouldn’t feel like chasing.
That effort should echo back.
That peace is better than potential.
And one day,
I’ll call someone
who calls back.
I’ll give effort
that meets effort.
And I won’t have to wonder
where I stand
because I’ll be standing
beside someone
who chooses me
without hesitation
Until then,
I walk forward
not empty,
but wiser.
Not rejected,
but redirected.
And the future doesn’t feel lonely anymore.
It feels open.
