Pull cord ever tried to rip your arm off?

When i first built my engine i quickly figured out that if i pull start it immediately without any planning, 50% of the time it will jerk the cord out of my hand and try to rip my arm off 😂. I started to just pull the cord slowly until it reached the compression point and THEN yank the starter cord to start it. This works for me every time now but curious if you guys also have this problem? What causes this to happen? Can i leave it or is it something important that i should fix?
