Can I break into External Audit in Australia with a Master’s in Financial Crime + Overseas BCom?
I’m currently studying a Master of Financial Crime Investigations in Australia and wanted some advice about career options.
I have a Bachelor of Commerce from overseas, and recently I’ve realised I’m much more interested in accounting and especially external audit. I genuinely enjoy audit, financial statements, and the analytical side of accounting, so I’m thinking about trying to move into audit after graduating.
• Is it possible to break into external audit with my background?
• Do firms hire people who didn’t do a Master of Professional Accounting but have a commerce degree + related postgraduate study?
• Would starting CA/CPA make me a stronger candidate?
• How hard would it be compared to local accounting grads?
I’m happy to put in extra effort, do bridging subjects, or certifications if needed — just trying to understand how realistic this path is in Australia.
Would really appreciate any advice from people working in audit or who’ve made a similar switch.
Thanks!
