What most people misunderstand about diamond size vs diamond look

I see this all the time:

Bigger carat = bigger looking diamond.

Not necessarily.

Carat = weight.
What your eyes notice = sparkle + spread.

Two diamonds can both be 1.00 ct and look completely different on a hand.

Here’s why:

Cut quality changes everything
A well-cut diamond throws light back at you. That’s the sparkle people react to.
A poorly cut one leaks light — and can look flat or even smaller.

Depth hides weight
Some diamonds are cut too deep.
You’re technically paying for the carat… but a portion of that weight is hiding underneath where you can’t see it.

Face-up size matters more than weight

Some stones are cut to maximize surface area (they look larger).
Others carry weight in the bottom.

Sparkle tricks the eye
Our brains perceive bright, lively diamonds as “bigger” — even when they’re technically smaller.

If your goal is visual impact, a slightly smaller but excellent-cut diamond can outperform a bigger average-cut one.

Now I’m curious:

If you had to choose, would you rather have
A) Bigger carat but average sparkle
B) Slightly smaller but crazy brilliance

No right answer — just preference.
