How do you move on when your ex cheated, dumped you, and still keeps triggering you while you’re trying to heal?

Ask GenZIndia

I think I’m dealing with some attachment issues after a really painful breakup, and I don’t know how to handle what’s been happening.

My ex cheated on me and then basically forcefully dumped me. It’s been about 1.5 years, and I haven’t been in any kind of romantic relationship since. I was extremely loyal and devoted to her, and I genuinely believed the promises we made about a future together. Losing that — especially the way it happened — really affected me.

What’s making things harder is that whenever I’m trying to focus on myself and move forward, she somehow shows up nearby with her group of friends. They’ll walk around the area repeatedly, and I end up noticing her. That triggers a lot of thoughts — like wondering if the person she’s with now has seen how much I loved her, or if she ever meant the things she promised. It pulls me back emotionally when I’m trying to progress.

Another thing that’s been confusing and honestly distressing: a few times when I’ve started talking to another girl — just normal conversation, nothing inappropriate — somehow false information about me gets back to them, and they suddenly distance themselves. I don’t know for sure what’s being said, but it makes me feel like I’m being portrayed as some kind of “psycho,” which is really upsetting because I haven’t done anything wrong to them. This has happened more than once, so it’s starting to affect my confidence and willingness to connect with people.

I’m trying to heal and move forward, but between lingering attachment, triggers when I see her, and these situations where connections seem to get sabotaged, I feel stuck.

Has anyone dealt with attachment issues after betrayal like this? How do you stop your mind from going back to the past and rebuild trust and confidence in new connections?

Any advice would really help.

TLDR - My ex cheated and dumped me 1.5 years ago. I was very loyal and haven’t dated since. Whenever I’m trying to move forward, I keep running into her which triggers old feelings, and a few times when I’ve talked to new girls, they suddenly distance themselves after hearing negative things about me (which I don’t understand). I feel stuck and unsure how to heal attachment issues and rebuild confidence in relationships.
