Workplace Etiquette

I (28M) was born and raised in the southern United States. I moved to a northern state not too long ago and another co-worker (M) said that some of the women at our job were rumbling because I was calling them Ma’am. where I was raised, it’s fairly common to call women that, that are around the same age or older than you. It’s not seen as offensive and more of his term of respect or politeness. Should I approach one or two of the women and explain my intention or just leave it and not say it to them anymore?
