What should I do? Difficult decision.
First time here so I hope I am not breaking any rules. To start out, I constantly overthink/analyze anything I do so this will be long and probably all over the place... sorry in advance XD, but thank you if you give me your time.
I am currently a senior at my college in my 8th semester. My current major is Finance and will graduate Fall 2026; however, I spent semesters 1-4 in engineering disciplines. Engineering was what I actually wanted to do, but due to a cascade of problems at home while living on campus my mental health was badly affected. I switched to Finance for less of stressful workload starting my junior year and started commuting to campus instead (which I should have done starting sophmore year tbh).
Even after tanking grades and waving a white flag end of my sophmore year (2.06 gpa in spring). I still had a 3.0+ gpa when I switched out of engineering. I pretty much completed all major prereqs besides Physics II.
While some parts of Finance interest me, its really not what I want to do. I kinda coasted the past 3 semesters not knowing what I wanted while trying to improve myself and my health (working out, being more social, getting out of house more). I have about a 3.5 gpa in my finance courses, but thats with not too much studying and classes are becoming boring and repetitive. While looking for summer internships, I am mostly interested in construction adjacent and engineering adjacent roles like Construction management and operations.
I think my self improvement of my physical health helped a lot with my brain. I did't really think about my decisions or classes much besides getting the grades the first 3 semesters in finance. But after the self improvement, its almost like a switch flipped in my brain that turned on some kind of itch that I haven't felt in a few years. So the want to go back and finish my engineering degree started persisting even more and I feel like I will regret it if I don't.
So the other day I had a meeting with the engineering department to see what it would take to finish the engineering degree. They are still working on a full layout chart for me for CM, Civil, and Mechnical, but from what I was told in the meeting both mechanical and civil would take me about 4 semesters + 1-2 summer classes to finish. CM is tricky almost half as much credits, but requires 3 co-ops that in the degree map take up 2 semesters and a summer. I was advised to do the degree full-time due to time constraints of classes and avoid scheduling issues with both school and whatever employer, so that killed my idea of doing part-time school and near full time work.
So if you made it this far here's my problem. I don't want to just drop the Finance degree as after this semester I would be a summer class and 12-15 credits (4-5 classes) from completing it. That means that the earliest I would start working on the engineering degree (mech or civil) again would be Spring 2027. Then a likely finish of the degree Fall 2028. By then I will be 24 basically 25 (Jan B-day).
I have plenty of time to decided (probably until end of summer), but refer to my opening statement. I have plans to go to a career coach on campus along with some other professionals once I get the finalized engineering pathway maps to get their opinions. But I said why not just ask here and see if anyone has been in my situation before or has ideas.
My biggest worry is just being in college for 6.5 years seems long asf even though I would finish with two quality degrees. My parents are supportive of pretty much anything I decide and said I am free to live at home as long as I am in college or eventually working until I can fully get on my own feet. But I also don't want to be a burden as I am a first gen college student and don't want to stress them out.
Thank you for reading my long ass rant and let me know what you think LMAO
