Looking for help cutting a large log into slabs (band saw / shop access)

Ask Austin

Howdy y’all,

I have a solid wood log that’s roughly 2 ft long and about 1.5 ft in diameter, bark still on. My goal is to:

• Slice the top half into cross-grain slabs (basically oversized circular coasters)

• Keep the bottom half intact as a rustic stool

From what I’ve been told, I’d need access to a proper band saw or a setup that can safely and evenly cut something this size. I don’t want to freehand this with a chainsaw and end up with uneven slices or lose a finger.

The main issue is stability and getting clean, level cuts.

I’m in Austin and happy to:

• Bring the log to you

• Pay for your time

• Trade labor / beer / food / whatever’s fair

If you have a shop, a large band saw, or experience doing this kind of cut safely, I’d really appreciate the help or even advice on where to go locally.

Thanks in advance.
