I’ve been sleeping through the first 4 hours of my workday
I (23F) started a WFH position in January and I’ve been struggling really badly with my sleep schedule. For context, I have had a phone addiction/social media addiction for many years which caused me to be literally nocturnal one whole semester in college. I would stay up until sunrise doomscrolling then sleep through all my classes. Now I have this remote contract position that I think I’m doing decently at but I want to really go above and beyond to secure a full-time role at the company. I know you may be thinking, how could I possibly be doing decently with only half of my workday? I genuinely am not given that much work and everything I’m tasked with I’m able to accomplish in just a couple hours maximum. Some days are busier than others but most days I genuinely have nothing to do. But that also worries me a bit because I want to be useful enough to be taken on full-time.
I have been trying out a wind down routine at night where I’ll shut down my phone, take a candlelit shower, read in my room with a sunset lamp, and then go to bed. It still usually takes me an hour or so to fall asleep. I would say I fall asleep around 12-1AM most nights and have my first alarm for 7:45AM and my workday starts at 8am and ends at 4pm. I usually feel groggy in the morning but I’ll check my teams and usually won’t have any messages. Then I’ll take my laptop from my office and bring it to my bed where I keep it at full volume and I let myself doze off. I set alarms every 45 minutes or so so that I can check my messages and emails again, but if there’s nothing I’ll go back to bed again. I’ll keep snoozing usually until noon. I know this is not good, and it makes me feel horrible about myself. I feel so unproductive but then part of me is like, I don’t even have much to do? But regardless, I could be working on other passion projects on the side or try to go above and beyond for my work, but even though I want to do that, the sleepiness feels like a drug that I keep submitting to and napping again and again.
I don’t know if I may have a sleeping disorder or I just need to lock tf in and have more willpower. I’ve struggled with my sleep for years and carry a lot of shame surrounding my sleep schedule, so please keep the advice constructive. Thanks.
