Are homeless in NYC given free/subsidized apartments?
I have a question that I combined with frustrated venting. I'm not asking for money, so I don't know why I'm getting an automatic warning on this post as I write.
I have a friend who's a homeless alcoholic in NYC, and I try to keep tabs on her whereabouts and well-being in spite of her constantly disappearing, ignoring questions, and playing dumb. For example, I heard from her when she was admitted to a hospital, but she couldn't/wouldn't explain why she was hospitalized but wanted me to let her stay with me for a bit, even though I'm out of state (I had to say no - she's a known liar and thief and has alienated all of her family and friends). She told me she was getting an apartment in a couple of weeks. She didn't elaborate beyond that. She's in active addiction, so I was wondering if it's even possible to be given a free or subsidized apartment if one's not sober and not trying to become sober??
She was a great person before addiction took over. I can't stand her as an addict. The level of self-absorption she has is astonishing. I could tell her I'm dying of a terminal illness (I'm not) and it would land on deaf ears and she'd just keep talking about herself. I'm trying to hang on to a shred of hope that she'll find her way out of this and won't be so damaged that she can't return to the best parts of who she used to be. Believe me, I've told her how much I love her and have begged her to get help and she just won't do it. I'd be fine if she just got sober even if I never heard from her again. She's told me she's been raped numerous times and she acts like she just accepts it. I realize she's in denial about a lot of things.
