Am I racist?
I had a really uncomfortable experience with a coworker who is Indian international student, so I’m wondering if I’m overreacting or if this is something others have dealt with. On literally the first day, before we had ever met in person, she connected with me on LinkedIn and messaged me asking about the job’s insurance, how much they pay and how to get those money, which already felt a bit off. When we finally met in person, she immediately started telling me how she has to pay rent in NYC, cover all the bills, and that her parents are in India and can’t support them much. I felt awkward but tried to be understanding because NYC is expensive. Then she straight up asked me if I could help her FIND AN INTERNSHIP. That’s when I felt really uncomfortable, because we’re not close, so I told her unfortunately I couldn’t and she started to say if she’s not getting an internship she will be broke which makes me feel so bad and actually asking around for her. Later on, another coworker told me that she does the same thing with her and at the same time, she accidentally mentioned she is going to Miami for spring break. That’s when it really started to feel like she might be constructing a “struggling student” narrative to get sympathy or opportunities, which makes me feel taken advantage of. To be clear, I’m not saying this is about nationality or that all Indian students are like this, this isn’t even the first time I’ve personally experienced something like this ( with other indians), which is why I’m questioning whether this is a cultural difference or just an individual behavior issue. At this point tbh I do not feel comfortable being friends with any Indians. Super disappointed
