What would it take to actually fix dating apps?
We all know the issues with the big dating apps, so I won’t rant. I’m more interested in what better solutions could look like — something closer to old-school OkCupid.
From my experience as an average guy(M26), the main problems:
1. Match → ghost → repeat.
Unlimited options + skewed ratios make matches disposable. There’s always “someone better” one swipe away.
Possible fixes:
- Hide photos until after you’ve matched and built some chemistry (text + voicenotes).
- Limit daily likes and cap active matches (1–3 max). To match someone new, you’d have to end an existing convo.
- Keep gender ratios balanced so one side isn’t overwhelmed.
2. Hard to find real compatibility.
Most apps optimise for engagement, not long-term fit.
Possible fix:
- Deep question packs (faith, values, money, lifestyle, family, politics).
- You answer for yourself and choose preferred answers in a partner.
- Show a compatibility % on profiles.
3. Low-effort prompts.
Looks/picture quality carry too much weight.
Possible fix:
- Mandatory voice prompts so you can judge personality as well.
Would you use something like this? What would you change or add?
