I switched to Private Insurance in January, am I being scammed?

Hello everyone,

I’m Italian, living in Berlin (29M). My gross salary is €92k/year, which comes out to about €4,468 net/month.

I recently switched from public to private health insurance (PKV) because I expected to save money, but so far it doesn’t seem worth it.

Through an independent broker I signed a plan with Allianz. Since January I’ve been paying the premium myself: €912/month out of pocket. After the switch, my monthly gross (before taxes/deductions) shows as €5,388.

When I compare the two:

  • €5,388 (gross now) − €912 (PKV premium) = €4,477
  • Previous net was €4,468

So I’m effectively “saving” only ~€9/month.

Am I missing something in how this should be calculated (e.g., employer contribution, tax treatment, etc.)? Would appreciate any insights from people who’ve done the same switch in Germany.

Am I paying too much for Allianz?
