So bit of a backstory. We’re in Southern California and renting a house. We moved in about 8 months ago, and while the landlord had a pool guy coming weekly, we refused to keep paying him because even when we moved in and he was servicing the pool there was algae. So we fired him and took it over ourselves. Managed to keep things good for the first few months and then in December noticed an uptick in algae, didn’t think much of it since it’s cold and were not using it anyways. Also, this backyard and the neighbors backyard has a bunch of fruit trees that’s dropping leaves and dead fruit in it regularly. Last month noticed like a LOT of algae and that the return waterfall had all but stopped and so we decided to clean out the filter. I kid you not the filter just have not been cleaned for YEARS. It’s an old DE filter and we were pulling out handfuls of muck from the bottom. Each of the filter screens had about 1/2-1” of like green algae grime on it. My one regret was not taking a photo to post here 😂 anyways, cleaned it out, got it running again and the water cleared up good but sides and steps are still getting constant algae build up. It’s been about a month since we cleaned the filter and the return has stopped flowing again and the water is green again (I did scrape the walls yesterday before the filter stopped running, so the water is particularly bad). We’re going to open the filter and try to clean it/unclog it again but I feel like we’re just constantly losing a battle with algae and our chlorine tablets don’t seem to be enough anymore. 

So assuming we can get the filter running properly, can I just dump a bunch of liquid chlorine in this to clear it out?? How many bottles/gallons do you think are needed? 

Will also contact landlord and let them know the filter has been failing cuz even my dad, who’s had a pool at his house for 20+ years was like this thing isn’t ancient and needs to be replaced. 

Try to be kind 😂 I’m 8months pregnant and we’re trying to get it straightened out so maintenance is easier once baby arrives.  

Been fighting algae since we moved in 8 months ago - can we just blast this with liquid chlorine?
