Ninja Gaiden Master Collection or Emulation

Hey I'm looking to get into the Ninja Gaiden series but I'm more interested in the original releases and balancing over the sigma versions in the master collection. With the master collection going on sale on steam I figured I'd ask, how is the emulation scene these days? Or am I still better off buying the master collection and using the black mods?
