What ARE we doing when we “consume” a certain something?

When tav or companions consume a tadpole, are they like literally eating it or are we literally allowing it to enter our eye every time we get a new one?? Or since there’s already one tadpole in our brain does it have some psychic ability to absorb external tadpoles rather than needing them to physically enter our heads?
