I have a few questions regarding the Olympia SM3 and the Olivetti Lettera 22.

General Question

I currently own an SM3 in remarkably good working condition, but I’ve been eyeing the Lettera 22 for a while. I do a lot of journaling and short-form creative writing (check out my sub, r/creativetypes), and I’m not really a collector, so I’d most likely only ever keep one typewriter around.

For those who own both machines, what is the experience like when transitioning between them? Is it such a wild idea to trade an SM3 for a Lettera 22?

I’m a fairly avid antiques browser, but here in Australia I don’t see many Olivetti typewriters, and I haven’t had the chance to try a Lettera 22 in person.

My understanding is that the Olivetti machines sit between conventional typewriter classes, in the sense that the Lettera 22 is, in terms of feel, somewhere between an ultraportable and a portable, while the Studio 44 sits between a portable and a standard machine. Has this been your impression?

Lastly, is the Lettera 32 a better machine than the 22? They seem to be comparable in price, so I assume the differences come down to personal preference, and that there isn’t much of a variation between the UK, Italy, and Spain produced versions. Is it difficult to find either machine in excellent condition?

Thanks very much for your input!
