Large firm vs. small firm
I’m a fifth-year associate with a focus on corporate and real estate transactions with some litigation experience. Currently living and working in the Mountain West and looking to transition into the PNW in the next 3 years (currently licensed in the jurisdiction I plan on moving to). All of my experience to date has been with two separate small 3-4 attorney firms. My workload is split roughly 60-70% transactional work to civil litigation. Mostly real estate and financing transactions.
I’ve been casually job hunting for the past year or so, and more in earnest as of the past month or two. I just received a job offer from a moderately sized regional firm (150+ attorneys). Pretty good offer overall. The kicker here is that this new firm does solely civil defense litigation, including some ID. I don’t overly enjoy litigation, and I’d love to see myself in a transactional only position or an in-house role. Those types of positions are extremely limited in my current jurisdiction. I’ve had several interviews for remote in-house roles that have not panned out.
Planning for the long run, I’d love to get some opinions on what type of experience looks better: 8 years of a mix of primarily transactional with some litigation experience at small firms or 5 years of transactional experience with 3 years of civil lit at a larger regional firm.
