Looking for advice…amateur sports shooting

I took photos of my kid’s lacrosse game last night. I’m allowed down on the field, and I was disappointed in my Tamron 200-500. Nothing wrong with the lens, but not being able to go wider than 200mm became limiting.

For reference, I have a D750.

I have a 70-300mm AF-S in the bag, but I’ve never loved the lens. I’ve often found it lacking…or the user is unable to coax good photos out of it. 🤣

I was thinking about one of the 80-400mm or 100-400mm options. Nikon, Tamron, Sigma all have lenses in that category and I thought I’d ask if anyone had experiences to share.

Or is there another option you’d recommend?
