A poem I wrote for my dad
Hey dad, today’s your day.
Today’s the day you left this world
Today’s the day I had to accept
That my 20s would be without you
That my kids would never know you
But only in spirit and memories I kept.
Looking back on basketball
And the times I thought I had it all
But never knowing
The one i pushed away
Would die someday
So I hope you hear my words
I hope you see me
I hope one day I be abled to say
I’m okay
Until then, I want you to know
I’m mad and I’m sorry
Not at you dying but
At the fact I pushed you away
even though you were trying
To fix our relationship
To have a connection and get a grip
But not to get all sad
Let me update you on this shit
Your daughter about to graduate college
I’m focus and never quit
I want to make you proud
And be able to say from heaven
“That’s my daughter” and shout insanely loud
Today I told it’s your 4th birthday
3 years in the sky
and it still feels like the worst day
But don’t think I wont celebrate
That your at peace
No more hurting
No more suffering
And far from struggling
Just my old man with a seat
Next to god, watching the sea
So I hope you hear me
I hope you see me
That your baby girl is becoming a woman
And I’m trying to flourish
I love you
