I audited all my insurance policies and found both gaps and duplicate coverage — here's what I found
After a claim experience that revealed I'd been paying for duplicate coverage I didn't know about, I did a full audit of every insurance policy I hold. Sharing what I found in case it prompts others to do the same.
What I found:
- Home insurance and a product warranty I'd bought included overlapping coverage for appliance failure. Had been paying for both for 3 years.
- Life insurance through work + my personal policy: the work policy is good but not portable. I'd been treating them as additive rather than thinking about what happens if I change jobs.
- No disability coverage beyond the work policy. This is a gap I'm now addressing.
- Credit card travel insurance: actually pretty robust, but I'd also been buying standalone travel insurance on every trip out of habit.
- Total identified savings from removing duplicates: ~$340/year. Total identified gap I'm now filling: disability coverage.
How I did the audit: made a spreadsheet with every policy, coverage limits, deductibles, what's excluded, and renewal dates. Took about 4 hours total.
The thing I'd suggest: don't wait for a claim to figure out what you have. The worst time to discover a gap is when you need coverage.
Has anyone else done this? What did you find?
