Made a mod that alters SkyUI appearance; having issues with permissions
In the early days of SkyUI, there was an option for item icons that were part of a "Celtic Icons" set created by GreatClone. In more recent versions, though, the only item icons allowed are those created by Psychosteve. I'm not talking about category icons here, the ones on the top of the menu, I'm talking about the little icons next to each item. There are still different options for the category icons.
I don't mean to insult Psychosteve in any way here, I know he must have put a lot of work into those icons, but I personally have never been a big fan of them. To me they look too simple, too flat. They seem to say "these were created on a computer using vector graphics software", and they don't really feel like they fit within the world of Skyrim, at least to me.
However, even though there are lots of mods to replace the category icons, I couldn't find any that replaced the item icons. This is probably just due to the effort involved—there are way more unique item icons than there are category icons, plus in order to fully replace them in all contexts, the changes have to be done in multiple places across multiple files. In other words, the item icons are much more "hardcoded", at least on the latest versions of SkyUI.
So, I decided to create such a mod myself. I'm no artist, so rather than try to create my own icons, I reused the ones created by GreatClone that used to be available. This did mean that a lot of the icons had to be reused across multiple item types, for example, there is only one icon for all armor and clothing, compared to Psychosteve having different icons for boots, gloves, clothes, armor, etc. It was quite a bit of work, but I got it done, and I was happy with the results. Pictures of what this looks like are available here.
I've been using this mod myself for some time, but considering it uses assets from SkyUI, I couldn't distribute it without obtaining proper permissions. Here's what SkyUI says about using its assets (source)
You may not use non-trivial parts of SkyUI in your mod unless given explicit permission. When in doubt over the nature of a trivial part, contact us. Permission will likely be granted, if you made changes that are significant enough for your name to be on top of the result instead of ours. Permission will likely be refused, if you just made a minor/superficial change, or if you are just reuploading our mod without any further contribution. We do want others to extend and learn from our work, but we do not want them to just copy and rebrand it.
This has been discussed on this sub before in this post, and that user opened an issue on the SkyUI Github, which you can see here. He heard back from someone right away, and was given permission. So, I did the same thing, I opened an issue on the SkyUI Github. But, even though I did this only a few months afterwards, I have never head back from anyone.
Does anyone know if there's anything I can do here? Does anyone know of any way to get in touch with anyone on the SkyUI team from whom I could get permission to upload this mod? Should I just upload it anyway? I'd like to hear people's thoughts.
A couple extra notes:
- I wasn't sure if I should use the "help" flair or the "mod" flair, but ended up going for the mod flair, since I have made a mod and would love it if people could use it, I just have this issue that prevents that right now.
- I originally created this for Skyrim LE, since that's what I typically play on, but if there was sufficient interest and this permission issue were resolved I would also create an SE version
- Even if someone made new icons that were in a similar style to GreatClone's, that still wouldn't really solve the issue, since changing the item icons requires distributing modified SkyUI files
